HQ Mock Draft Version 3.0
« on: January 27, 2012, 07:23:16 PM »

Round 1 : Jared Crick DE   Nebraska ~ based on the board he is here in every scenario. At 6'6", 285lb Crick would help give the Packers a solid rotation and the ability to move players into different spots to maximize their strengths.

Round 2 : Chase Thomas, OLB, Stanford
Height: 6-4. Weight: 239. Thomas recorded 51 tackles with 17.5 tackles for a loss, 8.5 sacks and five forced fumbles in the regular season. Just what the doctor ordered.

Round 3 : George Iloka, S, Boise State
Height: 6-3. Weight: 217. ~ He moved up the board this week at the Senior bowl. Some will say this is high but he is the #2 SS on the board today.

George Iloka 1/26/2012 Senior Bowl Interview

Round 4 1A : Cyrus Gray, RB, Texas A&M Height:5-10   Weight:198 lbs ~ I don't see Grant coming back but even then Gray is too good to leave on the board.

Cyrus Gray Texas A&M RB Supernatural

Round 4 2A : Don Barclay, OT, West Virginia
Height: 6-4. Weight: 305. ~ Depth in the OL ? Yes please. ~ Extra pick for Jenkins ~

Round 5 A :  Miles Burris, OLB, San Diego State
Height: 6-3. Weight: 235.  ~  As a senior, he recorded 78 tackles with 19.5 tackles for a loss, eight sacks and one pass broken up. Burris had a similar stat line in 2011 to his junior year production of 80 tackles with 20 tackles for a loss, 9.5 sacks and four forced fumbles.  3RD Down speed rusher at OLB for GB.

Round 5 B : B.J. Coleman, QB, Tennesse-Chattanooga Height 6'3 Weight 234 ~ His stock went up after the Shrine bowl. Another Flynn that would Shine with 2-3 in MM system and coaching.
~ Extra pick for College~

Round 6 : Tashaun Gipson, CB, Wyoming
Height: 6-0. Weight: 195. ~ More help needed in the secondary. Gipson had 95 tackles with 2.5 tackles for a loss, five passes broken up, one forced fumble and three interceptions in 2011.

Round 7 : Risard Matthews, WR/PR, Nevada
Height: 6-2. Weight: 215. ~ too good for TT to pass up. Matthews had a big senior season, recording 91 receptions for 1,364 yards and eight touchdowns.

That's my first stab at a full mock. It won't make everyone happy.

Love the Thomas pick and B.J. Coleman was great in the Shrine game. I would be happy with this draft.

Nice job Wiz as always!

Like the first 4 alot.

2) Speed, strength and the oline needed a whole lot of jersey to stop him.

3) WOuld love a S who has the ability to play corner if needed.

4a) Grant might not be back, Starks is completely unreliable healthwise. This kid looks slippery, nice!

The combo of 2 and 5a would give Green a lot to work with.  I would love to see what Green could do with Thomas.

I realize I only watched a small part of the front end of the Chase Thomas video, but what was it supposed to show?  If he's really the guy circled to start each play, he doesn't seem to be making any kind of impact.  What was I missing?

Will go further. He stands his ground . Also he drops in coverage on a TE twice and doesn't get burned. What a concept.

Here's the non-professional (my) evaluation, as if this had been an audition film, and I was asked if I'd want the guy.  Would appreciate knowing what he's doing right.  Stopped after the first 8 plays.

1.  Blocked by WR, no impact on play
2.  Unblocked, straight run at QB, who still gets the throw off deep, albeit incomplete
3.  Blocked around the back of the pocket, no impact
4.  Buried on the run blocking
5.  Ball carrier runs right by him
6.  Blocked way back off the line, recovers fumble because he's so far from the action
7.  Just chip blocked, pass is complete
8.  WR on crossing across the middle, where he's playing, receiver has to juke around the official, still catches the pass for a first down and more.

I really am trying to learn, not be an a-hole.  I have no horse in this race as I pay almost no attention to college football.

1) Holds the point, DE's #1 job against the run is to contain. Also dumps the blocker on his butt
2) Causes massive pressure on the qb, undoubtedly hurries the throw, also lays a smack on the qb, our OLBs don't do that too much
3)applies outside pressure, causes the qb to have to move up in the pocket.
4) initially double-teamed, does break through, causing the RB to continue to the outside, and manages to get a hand on the guy's ankle. Far more effective on the run than most of the OLBs on the roster
5) contains the run. Forces the ball carrier back to the inside, where the help is. dude gets to the outside, that's probably a td
6) not actually pass-rushing, playing "spy" or a short zone. good head's up play to hop on the ball
7) does get chipped, but manages to stay on his feet. If that's a 7 step drop, instead of the short drop, he can still maintain pressure
8) playing the zone means that when a guy leaves your zone, he's someone else's responsibility. this play shows his hustle, as he catches up and makes the tackle

Guess that's why I don't evaluate talent.  I would expect a highlight reel to show actual tackles, sacks, hurries (i.e., incompletions), knockdowns, etc.  Well, given the way mock and real drafts coincide (rarely), we'll probably never get an opportunity to see.

I'm only going off of personal experience. I played a bit of DE/OLB in high school and college before moving to safety.
I'm just watching him to see if he's doing what I think he's supposed to do, but he does play pretty well.

And I do hope that after seeing what I said, and them maybe watching the film again, you are able to see what is going well and what's not.
